Such an arresting image. A woman won’t leave her horse, Astro, as he slowly sinks in the mud. (Don’t worry, the horse survives!) Story and pics here. This photo immediately brought to mind two things: 1) that terrible scene in the Never-Ending Story where Atreyu loses Artax in the swamp of sadness and 2) a young adult short story by Margo Lanagan (fom her book Black Juice) called Singing My Sister Down (sent to me by my friend Kate) about a young girl sentenced to a slow, sinking death via tar flat. Powerful, resonant story about courage and forgiveness. Stayed with me for weeks.
A couple of pics from our new year’s trip to Yosemite last weekend. ‘Twas my first trip and long overdue. Such an awe-inspiring corner of the world. Can’t wait to go back after it snows! Some gorgeous pics can be found in Peter’s Yosemite gallery.
Peter’s photo was chosen by the editors of National Geographic as a favorite among submissions for their annual photo contest! Such an iconic image, huh? The photo is part of a series he shot called A Growing Memorial for his new photoblog In Startup Land (a photographic journal of Silicon Valley.) The series captures a viral Post-It memorial at the Apple Store a few blocks from Steve Jobs’ home in Palo Alto.

My first power animal was a wolf. She came to me in a dream in high school, which looked/felt just like this photograph except we were nestled under a shrub.
Peter’s spectacular shots of the Na Pali coast by boat.
