Aya

Aya Kato has a bunch of new pieces on her website. These black and white drawings are simpler than her usual fare, but are quite elegant… and I just learned from her website that she did the art design for Tori’s music video Sleeps With Butterflies. Not crazy about the song, but if you’re a fan of Aya’s it’s worth checking out how she integrated the flavor of her work.

Indie Craft

indiecraftdocjpg.jpgJust bought this cool t-shirt in support of the Indie Craft Documentary. The filmmakers are selling buttons and tees on Etsy.com to raise money for their doc about the indie craft community! Personally, I find the fast-growing, far-reaching DIY movement a fascinating sociological trend — evidence of a shift away from the (insane) corporate model toward a more communal, creative and autonomous way of life :)
(Thanks to No Good For Me for posting about this project.)

Hint: not a cannon ball fired by space pirates

meteorite.jpg

Watch this spectacular animation from Japanese National Television simulating the collision of a 500 km meteorite with Earth. The impact peels off the Earth’s crust creating a *crust tidal wave.* Good times.

(On YouTube, to the right of the video, there’s an English translation of the Japanese narration. Click on “What happens…”)

THE FOUNTAIN

FountainCover.jpg

1 MAN
1 LOVE
1 QUEST
1000 YEARS
1 DESTINY

One very short, but intriguing teaser.

Mayan mysticism, the tree of knowledge, time travel, destiny (Hugh Jackman)… I’m drooling. This impressive blog has been collecting all details related to The Fountain. The official website has some spectacular screensavers using “micro fluid effects” developed by Image Quest 3-D, each with different musical scores by the amazing composer, Clint Mansell.

Reaching out

AnnaDorsey.jpg

Yesterday, in honor of World Refugee Day, I meant to post these two fantastic websites that make donating to charitable organizations super easy:

Charitynavigator.com

I’ve mentioned this one before. This website evaluates charitable organizations worldwide according to how much of their donations are allocated to the actual causes rather than fundraising and administrative expenses. This kind of public information made easy is forcing charities to hold themselves more accountable. (Doctors Without Borders and Refugees International are both four-star organizations if you’re thinking about donating to refugee causes.)

*The painting above is one of the winners of the Third Annual UNHCR World Refugee Day poster contest by Anna Dorsey, Grades 7-8.
