Organic vs. Local

The TIME article, Eating Better Than Organic, investigates the question: is it better to eat local or organic? The Manhattan-based writer determines that a subscription to a CSA (community supported agriculture) was the best bet for him. Coincidentally, I recently spent time researching CSA’s in our area (CSA’s are different than co-ops b/c there’s no middleman. All monies go directly to the farmers.)

flea market finds

Not sure if these brass hot plates are the real vintage deal or knock-offs, but they’re gorgeous.

Plump birds.

Scary Cow
Last week, a friend invited me to a Scary Cow event and I was mighty intrigued by their recruitment spiel… Scary Cow is a “community based and community funded movie-making machine” based in the San Fran bay area. If the Scary Cow model works, it’s a creative and immediate way for novice filmmakers to learn the craft via hands-on participation. It’s also a practical way for more experienced filmmakers to find like-minded people with whom to collaborate. I was particularly impressed with the creator, Jagger, who’s fashioned a film collective that’s focused on learning, creating opportunities and fostering relationships rather than “the bottom line.” Scary Cow is only open to folks in the bay area, but may spread to other cities if the model is successful. So, if you’re local and have been wanting to try your hand at feature filmmaking, or if you’re a seasoned pro looking for a film community, sign up for an informational event and learn about how the collective works.

{photographer} Agatha Katzensprung
Decor8 posts about Agatha Katzensprung’s unusual perspectives and treatments. Her superimposed photograph above reminded me that I’ve been meaning to flip through Peter’s book on composite photographer, Jerry Uelsmann (after seeing some of his prints at the Andrew Smith Gallery in Santa Fe.)

Sunshine
Beware, the trailer for Danny Boyle’s (Trainspotting) new sci-fi flick, Sunshine, gets a little dicey toward the end. I could do without the melodramatic Requium For A Dream music, but I suppose reignition of the sun deserves some melodrama. Here’s what our sun might look like after it dies (but not for another 5 billion years.)
