Bob & The Queen

Take a look at Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan in the film, I’m Not Thereruminations on the life of Bob Dylan, where seven characters embody a different aspect of the musician’s life and work — directed by Todd Haynes’ (Velvet Goldmine.) And, here’s Cate reprising the role of the Queen in Elizabeth: The Golden Age:

Unfortuntately, the pre-battle speech on horseback could not be avoided. Has this become mandatory for every single solitary historical epic since Braveheart?

In other movie news: perfect casting for The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Happy Earth Day!

Here’s a tried and tested way to help the planet… Peter signed us up for Greendimes last month and already the junkmail invasion has ceased AND we’re planting trees! 100,000,000 trees and 28 billion gallons of water are wasted EVERY YEAR producing junk mail. Gift Greendimes to all of your friends! Less junk mail, more trees!

(Peter found this field of gold near El Granada driving toward the coast. He also took a beautiful pic of a majestic oak.)

hanging art

Sometimes, it’s less about the art, and more about the way you hang it. Domino has an inspiring feature (with lots of pics) illustrating various ways to hang art. I love this new trend of mis-matched frames grouped together – so chic. [via decor8]

I’ve had a little crush on Charlotte Gainsbourg since discovering her in The Science of Sleep, after which, I nurtured a little Charlotte obsession, netflixed a bunch of her movies and bought her album, 5:55. Now, six months later, I’m still listening to 5:55 probably more than any album I bought last year. Weird. I can’t put my finger on why. The album has this relaxed, nocturnal vibe – twinkly stars and city skylines. The melodies are lovely, twisting, turning in unexpected ways. The lyrics, intimate and clever (two of my favorite lyricists worked with her, Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hammond.) Charlotte’s whispery, sing-speak voice, is sensual, open, comforting… like she understands. Sappy, but it’s one of those albums that’s become a friend to me. My only complaint is that it’s too short. Give a listen while it’s streaming on MySpace. (5:55 is out in the US on April 24.)

free will

Found this quote on this morning:

“A man can do as he wills, but not will as he wills.” In other words, you are free to do whatever you want. The catch is that you don’t have any control over what you want.
